Why I shoot with Sony

I want to share with you a tremendous 24 minute video about why professional photographer Jason Lanier stopped shooting with Nikon and switched to Sony for all his professional work. Professionally I shoot Hasselblad for my large industrial and scenic work but totally rely on Sony for all my hand-held work.

You don't hear about big Industrial Mining companies like Vale being great stewards of the environment very often. I was suitably impressed while I visited the Voisey's Bay mine site to see such great attention to managing the companies waste stream. It makes good economic sense to be good stewards of the environment. Everywhere you go around the mine site, camp and mill buildings, you see four separate bins. not only waste generated by the operation of the mine but also collecting all runoff of rain and snow to remove any pollutants that might be present in the ground water.

It is amazing how many wedding clients come back to the studio for our other services. Passport Photos, Business Portraits and this week I did a bit of "Social Media Imagery" in the (Instagram Style) Big Gerry and little Gerry from King's Bridge Service Station.

Photos from my shoot last week for one of the new mining companies working in Schefferville. TATA Steel is one of the largest industrial companies in the World. Based in India with Canadian Head office in Montreal. I was very impressed with their company and hope to be shooting lots more for them this summer.

Photo of the Photographer

Today I was photographed by my Co-op Graphic Arts student from the College of the North Atlantic. Sarah Norman took on one of those hardest of shoots, to photograph a photographer. Well, I was delighted to see her work. The first thing I thought when I saw my photo, was that I wanted to show it to everyone. As a photographer, that is what I hope for all my clients.
Thank you Sarah, I love it!

A new Ghost for the Cathedral

On the eve of All Hallows Eve there was a concert by many of the local church organists. The Cathedral not only has a beautiful organ but it has a locally famous photograph allegedly capturing a ghost of one of the church masons from the 1892 rebuild.
During the concert, Patricia Young (my Mum & former Cathedral Organist) was reading a poem written by my sister Roz about that ghost photo. As usual I was taking photographs of the event.
While processing one of the long exposures in PhotoShop, I discovered the image of another ghostly shape. What do you think?

Samantha sitting on my Vespa

Dreaming about spring! just mucking with old photos, I love this one and share with the group. simple photoshop and nic software.

Classic soft II filter, a bit of desaturated, rounded rectangle tool, soft drop shadow, drop in signature, flatten and voila.
The Vespa is in the garage with the battery disconnected and the tank full of winterized gas. Also dreaming about spring.

An older way of seeing things

KRUZENSHTERN entering St. John's Harbour. A russian Tall Ship with about 240 cadets and staff on board looking quite classy. I hear that they enjoyed visiting George Street.

I have neglected this blog for the past couple of weeks so I thought you might like seeing a "Topaz" version of the Russian Tall Ship "KRUZENSHTERN".

It graced our harbour for a couple of days this week.

Graphic Photo Illustration

This photo was shot from the roof of the Bowering Parking lot and converted through Photoshop into an Illustration.
If you want to build a hotel in Downtown St. John's, then make it look and fit in with these buildings. It will pass council in the first reading.

Camera Sony a350, f8 1/250 sec at ISO 100.

Extreme long exposures at night can cause the image to look almost like a daylight photo. This photo of Salmon Cove in Conception Bay North, Newfoundland is shot at night. You can see a slight orange glow on the left side of the big rock across the harbour, caused by distant street lights. The long exposure also smooths out the gentle waves into a smooth"Liquid Lead" look.
Sony R1 ISO 160, 13 second exposure, f16 about 9:30 at night.

Panning Action

Industrial scenes can be quite cluttered and distracting. One great way to draw attention to the Fork lift is to shoot it while it is moving. This Panning Action shot reduces the clutter and distraction of the background while emphasizing the subject. This shot was at ISO 100, f8.0 & 1/15 of a second. Enjoy and comment.
